The levers that actually move the needle.
Sleep, movement, nutrition, light, and substances are not a side conversation — they're first-line psychiatric interventions with a growing evidence base. We integrate them, don't moralize about them, and work with what's realistic for your life.
Why this matters
A growing body of research shows sleep, exercise, nutrition, and substance use are as influential on mood and cognition as most medications — and often interact with them. We take all of this seriously, as part of the clinical picture, not a lecture at the end of the visit.
What we actually do
- Sleep — screen for insomnia, circadian issues, and undiagnosed sleep apnea; build a realistic sleep protocol; refer for sleep studies when indicated
- Caffeine — timing and dose review; often the missing piece in anxiety and sleep complaints
- Alcohol & cannabis — honest conversations about impact on mood, sleep, and medication; no judgment, just data
- Nicotine — support for reduction or quitting when it fits your goals
- Movement — evidence-based dosing (yes, there's an evidence base) matched to your current capacity
- Light exposure — circadian anchoring, especially for depression and shift workers
- Nutrition — blood sugar stability, omega-3s, basic labs; not a diet plan
Not a substitute for treatment
Lifestyle interventions are potent — but they're not a substitute for medication or therapy when those are indicated. We don't tell patients to "try yoga first" for major depression or psychosis. We integrate lifestyle work alongside medical treatment, not as a replacement for it.
